    John and Robert Kennedy were politicians.  They played rough in politics.  I've posted several comments on DKos arguing that I'd like to see that kind of rough and tumble politics come back to the Democratic Party.

    But their skill at politics doesn't mean they didn't or wouldn't have accomplished good for the country.  I disagree with the diarist that JFK was admired only in retrospect.  He inspired a different way of looking at politics in many--if not the diarist.  If he had lived, this would be a very different country today.

      I have no doubt that JFK was admired in real time; he won, after all, and if he'd lived, he would have been overwhelmingly re-elected in 1964.

      I'm just making the point (and hardly an original one) that a tragic death tends to whitewash the less savory aspects of any historical figure. In death, they become both more and less than they were in life; this is inevitable and there's nothing necessarily wrong with it, but it distorts efforts to translate lessons to the current moment.
