No jobs in rural areas, but housing in non-rural areas is unaffordable for us, so our mileage is high.

Our trade-off is to live off-the-grid in a small super-insulated cabin heated with approximately 1 cord of wood per year.

We want to get better travel-wise but it will require inventing employment where none currently exists.

Beware the everyday brutality of the averted gaze.

I have a 10 year old Ford Explorer (2 door, about 23 mpg highway) that just turned 155,000 miles. We heat about 1400 sq ft with 1 cord of softwood per year plus about $50/month worth of electricity (from hydro) 2 or 3 months of the year - we'll probably get that a lot lower this year by burning an extra 1/2 cord of wood.

We can run our business anywhere we can get phone, FedEx/UPS and internet, and where we live those are just barely available.

Our footprint is pretty small, but it wouldn't be possible without an SUV. I'm unrepentant.
