  •  Actually ... potentially industrial hemp ... (5+ / 0-)

Industrial hemp is quite interesting and a victim of the 'war on drugs' (although, the war on drugs might be a victim of industrial hemp being a competitor for synthetic fibers for clothing/other uses).  Industrial hemp is basically the only truly useful crop that can grow well in all 50 states (and most of the world) without human intervention and, among its many uses, it is reasonably good for making hemp bio-diesel (see also this article or -- there is much out there on this ...)

    According to this excellent site:

Fuel: Hemp seed oil can be chemically combined easily with 15% methanol to provide a premium diesel fuel substitute
This hemp bio-diesel fuel burns 70% cleaner than petroleum diesel in soot and particulate pollution

If the 'war on drugs' were not the obstacle it is and small-scale biodiesel plants began to proliferate, imagine if most of suburbia around America had patches of industrial hemp as a 'decorative' part of lawns -- this could pick up some of the burden of America's oil addiction and be one of the tools/paths for helping to figure out going about Winning the Oil Endgame.  Done well, this would truly be a carbon neutral fuel source (or near so).

Now, there is no silver bullet and dedicated some corner of every lawn to industrial hemp wouldn't provide enough fuel to support all the Hummers out there but, combined with moving toward plug-in hybrid flex-fuel vehicles, it could help get US off oil.

is from decade+ old material, but talks to the range of industrial hemp uses and how it is far more valuable as a crop than other options. (And, this is old data -- considering that industrial hemp requires fewer petroleum-based imputs, the relative value has probably increased.)

Of course, as part of this, it discusses hemp's value for cloth/clothing.
