Yes, religious fundamentalist conservatives have impacts on school curricula.  I have never heard of any objections to Newton's Laws, valence theory, and the like, but they have had effects on:

    Evolution/creationism/Intelligent Design
    Climate science
American History (founding of the country and religious/1st Amendment rights)
    Sex education

There is the "under God" phrase in the pledge as well that they are behind.

Also remember their involvement in legal issues such as religious devotions in graduation speeches, evangelizing in school, religious groups utilizing school resources, etc.

They have a much wider impact than just curricula.

I direct the peanut gallery to the following article:  Colorado music teacher foments ‘Faust’ flap about a music teacher who in introducing her students to opera using a children's video specificly designed for that purpose and owned by the school district, was suspended after ONE parent objected because the video contained exerpts from "Faust" which the ONE parent insisted was a satanic opera and accused the music teacher of teaching devil worship to her child.

Now you and I would look at that and say "wha?".  In matters of education it seems true that the loudest and most obnoxious parents are the ones that get their way, fundamentalism or not.

If a democrat demands accountability in the Capital and no one covers it, does he make a sound?

      •  I sent that one to most of my friends (0+ / 0-)

And this was a 20+ yr. old video produced for school children.  I wonder if those parents also ban the saying "Give the devil his due" because it refers to the same story.  Sell your soul to the devil and you must eventually pay the price (ask Mr. Cheney about that one.)

So...the Bible teaches devil worship because it mentions Satan?

Of course, they also ignored the part where Marguerite remains pure and ascends into heaven at the end.

        The truth always matters.

the cowardice of elected school officials, who are scared to death they might offend some wingnut. Either that, or they are wingnuts themselves.

        My goodness. Talk about ignorance.

Retellings of the Faust legend (with one notable exception), have one of two endings:

        (1) Faust is taken to hell as fulfillment of his bargain--showing that making bargains with the Devil leads to damnation).

        (2) Faust is saved through a return to religious faith and pious works, and reunited with his love, who has been saved from damnation herself because she recognizes the wickedness of Mephistopheles and resists his entreaties.

In either case, how "Faust" is at all Satanic is beyond me--and shows that the parent is just following marching orders, rather than actually learning about what she's railing against.

never get their Paul Harvey moment...you know..."and that's the rest of the story."  They "foment" their own turmoil by cherry picking issues for maximum effect.

I'm so angry and bitter lately about these fricking idiots I seem to be surrounded by that I don't think it would bother me if the rapture DID come and carry them away.  That's really what I need...I need them far, far away from me.

I can't believe a merciful God would inflict people like that on the rest of the planet.  Maybe they're our Job-like trials and tribulations.  I can only hope.

    •  Geology. Out the window along with the evolution (0+ / 0-)

... timeline goes geology, with rock strata and fossil record. It's like the booklets they now sell at Grand Canyon National Park that say the canyon was created during the Flood, as told by the story of Noah's Ark.

And astronomy. If the Universe is only 6–7000 years old, then light cannot be reaching us from more than 7000 light-years away.
