  •  should the mentally ill be voting? (0+ / 0-)

i never thought about this before, but it's a compelling question.

    •  I am legally disabled by a mental illness.... (6+ / 0-)

I get SSDI for it. I am not psychotic however, I am a depressive. I think the title should be "conservatives are psychotic, liberals are depressed". We are depressed by the inequality and pain we see in the world.
As to should the mentally ill vote, the psychotics are such a small part of the population that it doesn't matter. Most of them don't have their finger on the nuclear button (Shrub excepted). It doesn't matter if they vote or not, unless the population as a whole is suffering from an induced psychosis, such as followed 9/11. Because of my disorder, however, I never fell under the spell of believing that killing lots of people would make things better.
I enjoyed Hunter's post for the snark, and because it really does reveal something about the conservative mindset. But don't be kicking us crazies.

      Bush lied, people New Orleans.

    •  Mental illness is too general a term to (5+ / 0-)

be worth anything. There are many neurological disorders or brain diseases or whatever you want to call it. They are not all the same. And not everyone has the same degree of severity even with a specific illness such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Some are doing well, some not.
If someone is very psychotic, they are not likely to make it to the polling place. Have you ever seen someone who is clearly psychotic voting? I don't think it's anything to worry about.

    •  And let's take away their other human rights, too (6+ / 0-)

The right to vote is a protection against all the other rights we might like to take away from mentally ill people.  In the past, that has also included the right to procreate through forced sterilization.  Also, the right to refuse inappropriate, dangerous, or ineffective treatment such as lobotomies or confinement.

Today, many insurance companies treat mental disorders as only optionally requiring care.  Do you really think there are problems that would be solved by marginalizing people with mental illnesses even further?

    •  should we also give an IQ test? (3+ / 0-)

or how about an income screen...some think only landowners should vote.

      Your statement is inane.

My schizophrenic son voted for Kerry based on his own conclusions.
