    I went to the Amazon reviews and the Statistics by Freedman, Pisani et al looked interesting from the comments.  What did you mean by "require lots of thought by you and your child"?  We (at least I) like to think, and I'm always trying like the devil to get him to think.  Is it a thought provoking book (good) or one that's hard to puzzle out (could be bad) if not well explained?

      and well done book.

      It emphasizes (quite correctly, in my view) that even the simplest statistics require thought.  Anyone can learn to plug numbers into a computer.  But which numbers? And then what?

      When I taught undergread stats in a psych. department, one of the students complained to the head of the department that I was asking him to think (!)

      So, yes, if you like to think, and want to inspire him to think, this may be your book.
