  •  This diary is an example (17+ / 0-)

of what dmsilev was talking about in his diary entitled Community and Collaboration.  Because of the ever increasing content on dKos, data mining operations like this will become more popular.  You are essentially "branding" certain diaries by your selection.  The issue, as he(she?) discusses it, is whether you can maintain the work necessary to continue to compile the list or whether you will need collaborators like Susan G has.

    •  Another alternative (4+ / 0-)

is multiple rec lists, via a community with individual focus areas, frontpagers, rescues, ad revenue...(and a single crossover reclist and front page)

You can still be on the team, even if you're not in the choir.

      •  What would be the focus areas? (2+ / 0-)

I would like to have real digests (not diary rescues but actual condensation of content without necessarily attributing it to a particular diary, since the info might come from more than one) of the last week's worth of info in various tags (e.g. 2008 Presidential Race).

I think a list of tags containing a digest like that would be valuable to site viewers who don't post and to those of us who want to keep up with things but don't have that much time to spend reading.  Essentially what a digest tag reader would be getting would be the news (I use the word loosely, since we're not talking breaking info) in that category from a Progressive viewpoint.

...for VIP diaries.  I'm not sure how many we get each day from Cindy Sheehan or Michael Schiavo or Congressman John Conyers or Governor Bill Richardson or even David Sirota, and lately John Edwards.  They've slowed down a little since the election, and there's not one up there now.  (Unless Jerome or MSOC counts...)  Just give 'em an 8-hour slot automatically, and reserve the Rec List for the "ordinary users" - those of us who have nothing but the merit of our writing to recommend us.

I'm wary of splitting into categories.  Besides good stuff so often resonates between several categories, and is all too often hard to pigeon-hole.  And on the flip side, it makes for more places to check.  (I typically keep 3-5 Kos tabs open in my browser as it is already!)

      •  yes, absolutely-- (0+ / 0-)

I definitely support themed rec lists- we need another level of visibility. Once something gets on the rec list, it stays for a day, but the mid-level diaries by lesser-known diarists who get 20-50 comments and are very relevant slip away without getting the readership they deserve (while the pie wars take up the frontpage)

Peeder, i think this is a great idea.

in a sense already, since there is an environmental group w/in Daily Kos that shares info about interesting diaries / such.

Check out Daily Kos Environmental List.

But, MB will probably need help moving forward ...
