  •  Explain the bird counts to me (0+ / 0-)

I really want to participate, I've even made steps towards becoming a novice birder, but I feel kind of intimidated by the bird count process and underqualified. Maybe you can write or point me to a really good basic baby step discussion for the Bird Challenged on what to do.

Among other things, I live on several acres and the idea of a small circle mystifies me. I don't know where I'd pick. What if I see exciting birds that don't come into my circle?!? Oh, the dilemma!

I think a Kos Christmas Bird Count effort sounds fabulous. :-D

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

    •  The Circles are centrally set. (0+ / 0-)

And are resurveyed year after year, though new ones are added.  What you do is follow the links in my original diary for your state, to look for one near you.  Each one has an organizer, with contact info provided.  You get in touch, and they'll tell you when and where to meet.

They assign beginners to work with more experienced birders.  My first time, I had two assignments:  Count all the crows throughout the day, and write down what others told me.  And along the way, they taught me more of what they knew.

The one thing you really ought to have is a pair of binoculars, and a field guide to birds is helpful but optional.  Beyond that, others will show the way.
