  •  Denial Projectors Scared of Their Own Shadow (4+ / 0-)

    As I've posted umpteen times here at DKos about specific Republicans, they're denial projectors. Republicans are in denial about all kinds of reality. They repress their worst fears about themselves in denial. The psychic pressure is relieved only by projecting those fears onto someone else. The worst go so far as to beat up (often literally) Democrats for those imagined major malfunctions that live only in their own Republican hearts.

    That's why their favorite rhetorical tricks are the fallacies of the strawman, excluded middle, and rebutting the double negative. Because they can argue only with themselves, extroverting their inner conflicts. And why they can never complete anything, never really do anything right under cover of their lies. Because all they're ever really doing is shadowboxing themselves. Conflict is their only goal, not a necessary means to its end.

    The roots of their denial, the repression of awful truth that so often runs in families, especially rural and isolated ones, are equally clear. That's what selects people to become Republicans, rather than grow up or get their heads together.

    So the rest of us have to recognize their stunted emotional growth that makes pathological politics. When the pathologies are organized into lockstep, the politics is successful in perpetuating its power, if nothing else. So we have to avoid the temptation to "give them a taste of their own medicine", or we're all addicted to the same smack. But we also have to recognize that we can "fight fire with fire", when we can humbly recognize that the fire might not be so much part of their dysfunction, but more the larger dysfunction of our society where we each have our own major malfunctions. We can follow the lead of people who have already risen above the vicious cycle, but we have to work with the old system to change it to a new one. One free from the chains we put on each other and ourselves.

    Ignorance -> Fear -> Hatred -> Anger -> Violence -> Suffering -> Alienation -> Ignorance

    At least we can be honest with ourselves about ourselves. Which is the only way out of the cycle that destroys us all.
