    These, unlike the Prokudin-Gorskii pictures I linked to above, are a little grainier (due to the technique), but they're in generally better shape.

    They're the work of the Lumiere Brothers. Again, I can't display them because they're not on an approved hosting site, but they're well worth a look. There are a lot of them, and they show images of the French Western Front in WWI.

      Took the liberty to move it to ImageShack to post one of the pictures of French soldiers in the front line trenches. Note the black soldier in the centre and the blue uniforms which must have been incredibly easy to spot.

      I describe the Lumiere process elsewhere - it is literally grainy as the color filters are starch grains stuck to the front of the film layers.
