  •  it isn't something people are comfortable with (5+ / 0-)

on 8/29 we were presented wit the fact that we, the "best country ever to ever exist" with all of our technology and whatnot, were no better than a third world nation. And this was exposed to the entire world.

thus the lack of press coverage, the games played with the death toll, and so on. Rumor has it FEMA is operating on the assumption that there were 3,000+ deaths. 3,000 Americans have not been killed by a hurricane since the 1920s.

Katrina is something we need to own. It's a conversation, among many, that this country so desperately needs.

It connects inherently.  Think about the Foley issue - so many people connected to that on a visceral level because they have kids or they simply know kids.  Same with Katrina - it was a very human event, and showed vulnerability for everyone that was (imo) much deeper than vulnerability from terrorism.  Yet we kind of let it fade, like we let Sudan fade (excepting your excellent efforts) etc. and so forth.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic today because I feel so crappy.

It does raise an interesting question.  What is Bush going to do next?  9/11.  Taking us into war in Afghanistan, letting bin Laden escape, and then redeployment in Iraq.  Goes into Iraq without justification (so we had to go alone) or a postwar plan.  Katrina.  Dollar falling.  Federal government broke.  What next?  Every fucking step forward Bush takes, our country is put into greater and greater jeopardy.  It is the captain of the Titanic saying full speed ahead when informed icebergs have been sighted.  Perhaps there are a few Republicans who realize that they are going down with the ship unless they help us throw Bush over the rail.

Bush latched onto way forward as a buzz phrase because it means not looking at his mistakes that got us into the Iraq debacle.  We are just supposed to be patient while he countinues to steer the ship of state into catastrophe.

I don't care about a way forward.  I want a new captain and crew.  In two years, the ship will be sunk.
