  •  "Willfully ignorant"? (5+ / 0-)

    From the editorial:

The committee concluded that other people preferred to remain willfully ignorant — to protect Mr. Foley’s secret homosexuality, to avoid partisan embarrassment or for other political reasons.

That sounds dangerously close to a legal term,  [ deliberate ignorance]. Perhaps there's a basis for action:

DELIBERATE IGNORANCE - When knowledge of the existence of a particular fact is an essential part of an offense, such knowledge may be established if the person is aware of a high probability of its existence, unless he actually believes that it does not exist.

In other words, a person acted 'knowingly' if either: (1) the person actually knew a particular fact; or (2) that he deliberately closed his eyes to what he had every reason to believe was the fact. However, the requisite proof of knowledge on the part of the person cannot be established by merely demonstrating that he was negligent, careless or foolish.

While I disclaim any legal expertise, to me that sounds like deliberately not knowing something is just as bad as knowing it and not doing anything.

I'm embarassed that some Democrats signed off on that report. If we start a list of which Democrats should be targets in the 2008 primaries, I have some suggestions ...

on calling Foley a homosexual instead of what he really is, a child sex predator. This sends a subliminal message that Foley, and people like him, are supported by Democrats who support gay rights.

Kinda like those shrill wingnuts who conflate NAMBLA with gay rights, just a little more subtle. Gotta appeal to the lunatic base at every opportunity.
