I hadn't heard that Simmons was probably running. Why would he? I know he barely lost, but he will be 65 in 2008, and he had no political career before Congress. Especially with the Democratic pres nominee nearly assured to win CT-2, I can't see how Simmons expects to beat Courtney, who by then will be an incumbent with the plum assignment of the Armed Services Committee (and in a strongly Dem district nonetheless).

Current House tally: 233 Democrats, 202 Republicans. Kudos to Ciro Rodriguez for putting the icing on a wonderful election year cake.

    •  Well, Simmons first picked up the seat as Al Gore (3+ / 0-)

was winning the district 56-38 in 2000.

he was defeating a 20-year incumbent who had had close races before and was thought to be out-of-touch and disconnected from the district.

for Simmons will be? Just hope for a higher turnout?
Not trying to dismiss Simmons(to win in this district as he did shows he has some impressive political skill), but unless Courtney screws up badly in some way, I think he will be ok.

        •  The biggest reason Joe Courtney won (4+ / 0-)

was because of Ned Lamonts campaign. The Turnout at UCONN driven by the UCONNS college Dems is what gave Joe Courtney the seat.

Simmons is the last best hope for Republicans in CT. He's well liked by the huge number of Veterans in th 2nd and Joe Courtney knows 08 will be very bit as tough and close as 06.

      both appointive and elective

he first served as a staff member for John Chafee, and then as chief of staff for the Senate Intelligence Committee under Goldwater

He served in CT House of representatives in 1999-2000 before he defeated Gedjensen to win his House seat in 2000.

disclosure - I have known Rob for more than 40 years.  His classat Haverford was '65 and my original class was '67.   He was on CrossCountry while I was out as a frosh before I switched to soccer (he later captained both XCountry and Track).
