Fat chance.  Iraq had a secular Sunni government under Saddam.  Doesn't this seem like an attempt to return things to the way they were under Saddam?  Kinda like putting Humpty Dumpty together again.  After the track record of the Bush Administration, that has the chance of success of the proverbial snowball in hell.

Right.  The whole reason we tilted toward the Ba'ath party back then was to contain Iran and to contain radical Islam.  And that was the idea about not going on to occupying Iraq the first time we had a chance.  We just wanted them to dump Saddam and select some secular Sunni general to run things.  That is what we would like still.  Even a secular Shia would do.  That is why a coup would make sense.  The existing government is not functioning anyway.

But of course that was the initial plan of the Pentagon anyway:  put in a secular Shia, leave most of the rest of the army and bureaucracy intact, and just get the hell out in a few months.

Somewhere along the line someone decided that there was more money to be made and more resumes written if we just built a whole new Iraq from the ground up.  Thus the decision to not reconstitute the old army and to deeply ban all ranking Ba'athists from the civil service.  That is how we opened the door to this sectarian civil war.  But that is not the sort of stupid decision we can undo this far down the road.

The other day Bush talked about how he was talking with people in Crawford about Iraq and what to do about "this war that we find ourselves in".  It is like he is Rip Van Winkle or something who went to sleep when Paul Bremer was sent to Iraq and just started to wake up when he got a thumpin' last November.

When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

`The question is,' said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

`The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master -- that's all.' Alice was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. `They've a temper, some of them -- particularly verbs: they're the proudest -- adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs -- however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That's what I say!'

`Would you tell me please,' said Alice, `what that means?'

`Now you talk like a reasonable child,' said Humpty Dumpty, looking very much pleased. `I meant by "impenetrability" that we've had enough of that subject, and it would be just as well if you'd mention what you mean to do next, as I suppose you don't mean to stop here all the rest of your life.'

`That's a great deal to make one word mean,' Alice said in a thoughtful tone.

`When I make a word do a lot of work like that,' said Humpty Dumpty, `I always pay it extra.'

From Through The Looking-Glass, by Lewis Carroll, Chapter VI.

Bush seems to channel Humpty Dumpty every time he speaks, don't you think?

How do you ask someone to be the last man or woman to die for a president's ego?

According to Answers.com's definition that word has two definitions.  The second being:

Meaning #2: incomprehensibility by virtue of being too dense to understand
          Synonym: impenetrableness

So Humpty was not all wrong.

Joe would be happy to find another one if he had the right loyalties.
