Organic production techniques may be better for the land, may reduce dangerous chemicals getting into the environment and may make farm animals lives more pleasant,

Especially, the part about supporting making the life of farm animals better. This is a benefit to my soul.

We are what we eat. Animals raised in penned conditions where they are standing shoulder to shoulder, in their own feces, and fed food that is not natural to their bodies, create all kind of problems for "consumers", not the least of which are the ecoli outbreaks that have come from feeding ruminants grain.

And if we destroy the topsoil land by our farming techniques, and our oceans by our run off , and the rest of our environment by ignoring the damage created by our practices, there will be less and less for consumers to consume.

From my childhood, I remember the masses of dead fish on the shores of Lake Erie.  It took an environmental movement to reverse that by stopping the practice of dumping industrial pollutants into the lakes.

And that was when there were half as many people on the planet.
