we think we could never bear...until we must and so we do. An illness of self or a loved one, weather disasters, accidents and so well as war.

So I agree with you, in that situation we'd do what we had to. People who enlist know they might face the unbearable. Don't get me wrong, they shouldn't be there, Dawn should never have been unguarded in that Hummer, they shouldn't have to tolerate cameras in their shower, even for a wrong war this is going badly.

But imagine being drafted as so many were in Nam. Forced into the situation...and they had to bear it too.

Dawn was "luckier" than many. Only had to go there once and came out al;ive and phusically not wounded.
Can't imagine the kids going there two, three, four times. And they want a "surge". Going to be even rougher.

When/how does this end? When someone builds a time machine and we go back and never start this damn war?

no winning, and not only is there no exit strategy, they want to put more men in harm's way.

If they thought that they would lose face if they left now, just think of how resistant they will be to leaving after Bush's escalation.  I can hear it now, "Gotta give it more time!  Stay the course".

Then when he leaves office, the mess will be handed to whomever wins the presidency, and the GOP will blame the Democrats for the loss no matter what happens.
