is what I'm reading.  As you point out though I don't think it will work.

Regardless of U.S. threats Iran and Syria are likely to continue doing what they've been doing.

I don't think Iran would have enough popular support to send divisions into Iraq and I doubt they would launch missile strikes without a provocation.  They can do a lot more damage to U.S. efforts by simply sending more resources over the Iran-Iraq border--as has been the case since 2003.  We don't have and never have had sufficient troop levels to police the borders with either Iran or Syria.

    •  Iran's using the "Vietnam Corollary"... (4+ / 0-)

...they know they can't go toe to toe with us conventionally but Vietnam defeated us assymetrically and that's their strategy. Support and infiltrate the insurgency. Catalyze, oxygenate and fuel the civil war. Wear us down by attrition and increasing our casualties. Ultimate victory over "the Great Satan" and annexation or assimilation of Iraq.

Change the course--change the Captain. Change the crew. But save the ship!

from the US side.  I base that on the political adjustments that have been made.  You don't fire an anti-Iran invasion General and replace him with a pro-Iran invasion Admiral, if you're only bluffing.  You don't dismiss a senior intelligence person like Negroponte over a bluff.

Who bombs who first?  We'll see.

All of this adds up to an escalation in tensions with Iran.

Don't know if you heard about our raid of the Iranian consulate in Irbil, Iraq this morning (via NPR). . .
