    had a moderately liberal record in the Senate, but I find it hard to forgive him for running against, and defeating, Ernest Gruening in the primary in '68. Gruening, an old New Dealer, was one of only two members of Congress wise and brave enough to vote against the Tonkin Gulf resolution. (The  other, Wayne Morse, also lost that year.)
