  •  McCarthy won (7+ / 0-)

He was disgraced as a man, and Americans tut-tut and say "thank heavens that's all behind us", but where are your Communists? Where even your ordinary homely neighbourhood socialists, such as we have in Europe? McCarthy wiped them out, extinct, and if they are ever to be a part of the political ecology of your country again, they'll have to be deliberately re-introduced.

Fortunately the Bush administration is preparing an environmentally-rich habitat for them.

    •  Yes McCarthy won (0+ / 0-)

I attended universities in USA 1967-74.  The damage from McCarthyism was so severe that even the professors who opposed the war in Viet Nam were always careful to point out that they weren't socialists.

Even worse, the BEST professor I had was one of those Cold War Liberals who had long ago sold his soul to the military-industrial complex.  The day I visited his office and saw the paraphernalia on his wall he had collected in Viet Nam while in country organizing the Phoenix program was possibly the worst day of my life.  I finally had found a very intelligent man for a teacher--someone I had been looking for my whole time in higher ed--and then to discover he was a war criminal was a crushing experience.  I never did recover from that discovery.

Nothing is fool-proof to a sufficiently talented fool
