If I called him a "convicted sex offender", would that be preferable?

Yes, technically speaking, "indecent assault" plus "battery", the crimes to which he pled, are different from "rape".  But not by much.

I'm left with two questions, for whoever's still following this thread:

    • What summer camp hired this guy to be a counselor after he had been placed on leave under suspicion of rape?
    • When will we see the essay from the male partner of a rape victim telling what it's like to be with someone living with that injury?

      1. Yes, I think it is important not to say someone is a rapist when they were not tried or convicted for that crime.
      1. I imagine that the summer camp had the same sympathy/empathy for this young man as did Cross, some of the Harvard faculty, and myself.
      1. I think the essay you are talking about is very important.  There are tons of men who live with women who have been the victim of rape.  I imagine that some have written about this, but I would welcome more.

But if you've been charged with rape, you shouldn't be working around kids.  I'm going to say that's pretty stupid on the camp's part, assuming they knew, which I wouldn't -- which makes them even dumber for not learning about this.

I don't see how any of the charges against this guy would mean he shouldn't be working around kids.  This guy got drunk, made very bad choices with a woman who was also drunk.  Again, I am not justifying or downplaying what happened, I just don't see why this should mean he shouldn't be working around kids.

            You're not a parent.

            •  Thats not the issue (0+ / 0-)

I am not a parent, but I am a man, a lawyer, a former camp counselor and a liberal.  If you wouldn't send your kid to a camp because of this guy, thats your perogative.  However, I think it is absurd to think that this guy represents the slightest bit of danger to society or to this camp, or to any of the campers.

This kid is getting punished.  He is serving 18 months house arrest.  I hate to see this type of villification.  I have a lot of empathy for the victim of his crime, but in this instance I also have a lot of empathy for this guy.

              •  Well... (0+ / 0-)

... I'm a man, a lawyer, a former camp counselor, a liberal and a parent, and the idea that it's "absurd to think that this guy represents the slightest bit of danger to society or to this camp, or to any of the campers" is short-sighted.  How do you know he'd never touch anyone else, post-accusation?

What about this guy is deserving of empathy?  Read the story again as to what he did.

                •  We are going nowhere (0+ / 0-)

You want to villify him because of the way you read the stories.  You also villify Cross.  I choose not to villify him because of they way I read the stories.  I explained in my very long post above why I believe some of what was said in the diary and some of the comments were misguided, and why I have empathy for all the persons involved in the story.  You believe I am misguided and I believe you are being unfair and judgmental.  We will just have to live with each other and agree to disagree.

    •  I would write that essay (0+ / 0-)

But never in this forum, with all virulent racist woman-bashers upthread that cannot believe that good little white boys would ever rape a black stripper.

      •  Jackass (0+ / 0-)

No one has said that they "cannot believe that good little white boys would ever rape a black stripper."  What they are saying is that there is overwhelming evidence that these boys did not rape that stripper.

        •  what evidence? (0+ / 0-)

All you know is what you have read in the newspaper or seen on TV.  That is not evidence, much less "overwhelming".

If you knew a damn thing about rape victims, you would know that the case is hardly atypical -- there are plenty of reasons rape victims have a difficult time IDing their assailants and getting their stories "straight", especially in the case of a gang assault.

I for one am willing to let a jury decide the matter.  That you are not so willing, and furthermore adamantly insist that the accused are innocent, quite clearly indicates that your agenda is something other than finding out the truth in this case.

It's too bad that vile-mouthed people such as yourself are even allowed to post here.

          •  WTF? (0+ / 0-)

I think that I have explained this five times on the thread already.

The prosecution is required to disclose their evidence before trial.  That has happened and the evidence is shit.  Its not just shit, its overwhelmingly shit.   And this case is atypical in that in most rape cases there is some evidence to support the claim that the person was raped.  I don't know why that's so fucking hard to understand.  I believe the accused are innocent only because that's what the evidence shows.  Anyone with half a fucking brain can figure out the truth in this case.  Now that the idiot prosecutor is gone, expect to see the charges dismissed very shortly.

It's too bad that people who are as fucking dumb as you are even allowed to post here.
