    on this story, i think you will find your answers.

    my reading is that they published the story in december of 2005 because they were about to be scooped by their own writer, James Risen

      I just don't believe that it's a coincidence that the national media completely rolled over and played dead from 2001 to about 2005.

      And, sure, part of the story is 9-11 and old-fashioned media management, but I think there's more to the story.

      The beat reporters did their jobs as well as they could, but the big bosses created a Chinatown kind of situation in which the beat reporters lacked the intellectual and quantitative resources to do their jobs properly.

      The most obvious, most clear-cut example is what happened to CNN. The next most obvious example is what happened to CBS, which apparently made a serious effort not to play ball. It seems as if ABC was allowed to keep a veneer of impartiality in exchange for KSFO being a Bush Rovie party organ.
