  •  I have been looking at this for a while (7+ / 0-)

the slippery slope seems to have started with emergency appropriations after the World Wars when it was necessary to take some actions urgently without a lot of deliberative process.

FDR and Truman, the UN police action in Korea, then the Red Menace, the Cold War,the Domino Theory, Vietnam, Iran Contra and the CIA's covert actions
to destabilize the third world and keep them from resisting the exploitation of their resources by the multinationals.

Whatever it took to keep the factories running at full employment. Eisenhower warned about the Military Industrial Complex even as he signed into law the National Defense Highway bill in good whatever is good for General Motors (and big oil) is good for the USA mode.

Our Nation of Laws based on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights began to be referred to as big government regulation, bleeding heart liberals, tax and spend liberals, tree hugging hippees...the ACLU and the UN nation building were treated like road hazards, something to just get rid of.

Before long it was the people who wanted to ignore the laws that were making the laws...
