  •  that seems like a lot of work.. (3+ / 0-)

..wouldn't it be easier to read and summarize the article?

    •  not always, sometimes the originality is... (3+ / 0-)

in the putting together or disparate ideas.

Here, I'll offer up and you can criticize my most recent diary, juxtaposing 1914 and 2007, and asking if there are similarities.  Most of what I put together is blockquoted material (only 1 of which is under copyright, and that I limited as much as I could).

I really don't think my summarizing of the mindset of 1914 would even be in the same universe of qualified description as Edith Wharton's 1915 firsthand account.

So, was putting together those attributed quotes a worthwhile contribution?  I thought so.

And P.S., I know this is Kos's site and I will of course follow his rules.

what you'd done in that diary would almost certainly be seen as fair use.  You quoted selectively from the copyrighted material, and did so in the context of making a larger point, pulling in references from other sources as well.  Also important is that the purpose of your post was far broader than merely relaying the copyrighted item, and added significant content and commentary of your own creation.

Clearly (to me, at least), you've got a good grasp of where the fuzzy line is and stay safely inside it.  Interesting diary, by the way.
