  •  let's look at the politcs and assumptions (0+ / 0-)

is doubling mpg necessary or meaningful? as usual MSM is misinformative. i mean, EPA's barely adjusted or updated research since 1994. and that news ought to b e taken with salt as we all know what congress slit its hamstring.

in dingell's words: CAFE changes aren't urgent. i agree in part because US and foreign passenger vehicles already exceed CAFE Empg. across consumer vehicle classe, 2007 model year range is 40-17city/40-25hwy. besides trucks and vans, SUVs are the lowest performers with the highest profiles, but there are more passenger cars on the road now, travellin more miles per year. that's one reason mpg is up without extra regulatory pressure.

MSNBCDingell told reporters that any rule changes should weigh "the needs, the costs, the technological ability and the economic ability of industry and the market to absorb these changes.

he believes market forces are efficient. US demand drives production values. so i agree with his sense "urgency" in principle, given "feebate" caveat as i noted downthread.

However, Dingell said Congress should approve more incentives for U.S. automakers to retool cars to burn alternative fuels like ethanol and clean-burning diesel, and to make more cars that rely on electricity rather than fossil fuel.

as always, the devil is in the details of GHG emissions and pork -- not the CAFE standards. i mean, do "environmentalists" really care what kind of fuels dingell advocates? each carries a different mpg and GHG load.

Dingell also said nuclear energy is "one of the most promising and necessary courses that we can take in terms of weaning ourselves off foreign oil."

one really can't take for granted why dingell is getting the media kibosh now.

Diversity is the key to economic and political evolution.
