  •  Attacking the WRONG PERSON!!!! (0+ / 0-)

I did not see this until today so am coming very late to the game. Since there is no email address on your profile page, I'm replying to one of your most recent comments in another diary to direct you back here. What I wanted to say is in the subject line: you are attacking the WRONG PERSON.

I happen to know Dorie Hightower. She’s a friend of mine. I worked with her in my role as a writer at a different NIH agency. She is not a Bush plant or a conservative. In fact, she's a darn good liberal/progressive who happens to work for the federal government in public relations. She did not ask me to write this reply, but after seeing some of the uninformed and, to be honest, semi-crazed comments, I felt compelled to defend her.

Dorie is a NIDA press officer who, in that role, must reply to press inquiries. Most days, that means answering reporters’ basic questions about science conducted by NIDA researchers or funded by NIDA, and directing reporters to experts within NIDA to help answer their questions.

On occasion, as a press officer, she must also reply to questions about things she is unfamiliar with or, as I’m going to guess was the case here, was not involved in. In cases like that, press officers tell reporters what their bosses tell them to say. Based on my experience working with PR people in the past, I believe it's safe to presume that's what happened here.

In other words, Dorie was in all likelihood NOT involved in the edits made to the Wiki entry. Frankly, I’m amazed that anybody would think she was. She was the press officer who answered the reporter's question. That's it. That's her job. Heck, she probably didn’t like having to give that response. But she doesn’t really have a choice, does she?

And please don’t say she should be a whistleblower or refuse to do it. We’re talking about edits made to a Wikipedia entry, not some contractor bilking the government for tens of millions of dollars.

So anybody who sent hate email to Dorie blaming her for this dumb stunt sent it to the wrong person. And because she's my friend, that pisses me off. And because it suggests that too many people on this site can't seem to think for themselves, it really pisses me off.

I’m glad we have people like you, GrannyDoc, to hold the administration’s feet to the fire. But direct your vitriol at the right people.

    Man, I fuckin' hate politics.
