in advance.  It is a profession that one learns on the job.  Some basics about subject matter, curriculum development, classroom management, etc. can be introduced.  Teachers need to be encouraged to constantly reflect on and learn about teaching.  However it is the caring that makes the biggest difference. I had teachers that had A's at college and prepared perfect lessons yet could not connect with their charges.  Whereas some new and older teachers who were less polished, but cared, were far more effective.  And teaching specific skills is important.  Students know if they have learned something worthwhile.

I loved my career - 32 years in education - 16 years in the classroom and 16 years in administration.  People kept telling me that I would lose my enthusiasm and idealism.  I never did.  Each year I looked for places where I was making a difference.  What disturb me most were teachers so focused on the perfect lessons, they couldn't see the children in front of them.
