with how the media presents all people as characters in a drama. Smith was seen in the media enough that when she died, people at least knew who the media was talking about and knew something about the soap opera story of her life.

When a soldier dies, people rarely know much about them to begin with, so it feels different. People knew something about Pat Tillman, but still not as much as they knew about A-N Smith.

But I am reminded of something from the first Gulf War. There was a female helicopter pilot named Marie Rossi, I think, who got interviewed a lot by CNN from Iraq. I remember seeing enough of her that there was a sense of familiarity. Then it was announced that she had been killed when her helicopter crashed. That death affected me more than any others because I knew something about her before she had died. And I still remember it, as a result.
