    the casual visitor isn't going to go to individual diaries and look at what the readers are reading -- they're going to jump to the blogroll and see what Markos recommends. That's the purpose of a blogroll.

    I found dKos through the blogroll on Wil Wheaton's site. I found others through the blogroll here (and through general participation). Through those blogs, I found yet others. Some I've added to my "must see" list, others I stop in less frequently. It's the Breck Magazine theory of advertising -- you like something, you tell three friends, they tell three friends, and so on, and so on...but with a blog roll, you're not telling three people, you're telling 300...

    One of the standard lines around here is, "If you don't like the way things work here, start your own blog." Yeah, but good luck getting anyone to click over to it if they don't know it's there...
