  •  no that's silly (0+ / 0-)

That's not what I was saying.  Of course if you beat someone up because they're of a different race it's not ok.  But if there is a group of blacks who want to help other blacks that's not racist, which is what this church appears to be trying to do.

Your words were, "It's racist if you replace the words black with white, but not the other way around."

Perhaps you don't know this but there are people in America that would argue that racism is only about the bigotries of whites against other races. I've known grad students that thought that way, and there have been various school boards that have used that kind of rhetoric. If you knew that there people that are currently arguing that it's impossible for a black person to be racist against a white person would that change how you chose to speak of this matter? Would it change how you view the TUCC statements?

And the TUCC "precepts" sure as hell go a lot further then just helping "other blacks" when they require thinks like, "Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System".

      •  OMG!!! There are Black churches??? (0+ / 0-)

And they pledge allegiance to Black leadership??? The horrors! I can't believe there are actual GRAD students, of all things, who believe racism as practiced by white people is categorically different from prejudice as practiced by everyone. I believe the formulation is something like Racism = Prejudice + Power. Now I'm no mathematician, but I think this formulation has something to do with historical circumstances in our country and unequal distribution of power across racial groups. And no, it doesn't change how I view the TUCC precepts.

So if a bunch of black people beat up a white person just because they are white do you do not consider that racist?

If that’s not your position than you’ve misunderstood what I wrote because that was the position of those grad students you are defending. They all changed their mind btw, some of them ending up being pretty disgusted with what they had been taught.

I believe the formulation is something like Racism = Prejudice + Power.

1)You are 100% wrong, racism doesn’t need power to be there, it is just not as likely to be noticed without power behind it.

2)There are many, many types of power.  If you haven’t noticed the power that any person (of any race) can assert over another of another without regard to politics or economics then you strike me as incredibly lacking in empathy or maybe just really spoiled.

Now I'm no mathematician, but I think this formulation has something to do with historical circumstances in our country and unequal distribution of power across racial groups.

I grew up in San Francisco and went to very racially diverse  public schools where your idea of "unequal distribution of power across racial groups" only adds weight to my argument .

And no, it doesn't change how I view the TUCC precepts.

Well, if you thinking black people beating up white people because of their race isn’t racist then that doesn’t surprise me. And if you think it does then you goofed and didn’t really consider what I wrote before.
