Apparently NAFTA has allowed cheap, subsidized US corn (Zea mays, of course) to flood the Mexican tortilla market, putting Mexico's farmers out of business -- now these people are pretty much obliged to move to the US... half of everyone in Mexico knows someone here...

From the Austin-American Statesman's In Mexico, 'people do really want to stay'

The clearest reason why Mexico has not prospered under NAFTA is found on the farm, the work place for about one-fourth of the population.

From 1993 to 2003, exports of American agriculture to Mexico more than doubled, climbing from $3.6 billion to $7.9 billion . . .  In a similar period, Mexico lost nearly 2 million agricultural jobs, according to Mexico's National Employment Survey. . . .

In the nearby town of Tizapan el Alto, where traditionally 90 percent of local people have farmed, one-third of all agricultural jobs have been wiped out in the past five years, said Mayor Ramon Martinez. . . .

"People do really want to stay," the mayor said, but with the pull of the north, almost half his town's official population of 19,000 has decamped for the United States. "We're basically exporters of people."

The only thing Republicans do well is take our tax dollars and transfer them to the rich, instead of providing the services we thought we were paying for.

most people really don't want to leave their home, their families, and everything they know. They do it because they want something better. In most cases, they see absolutely no future for themselves or their kids - and in some cases, they only see starvation and death.

Give them a way to make a living and give their children something decent (NOT a McMansion and designer clothes - we're talking enough to eat and a roof over their heads), and they will likely STAY WHERE THEY ARE.

If we concentrate on helping our neighbors, maybe we won't have the immigration problems we have now.

So why don't the Rs want to help ANYBODY? Even when it would make our country STRONGER?

My best explanation is that the Republicans are yoked ideologically to government by the ascendant fraction of capital, which cares about nothing but its profits and which sucks the world dry to meet a tremendous demand for profit amidst a tremendous surplus of capital.
