  •  West did no such thing (2+ / 0-)

West said Obama was a good guy but wasn't impressed with Obama's announcing his candidacy in Springfield.  He was wary of the people advising Obama and raised the question of who was funding the campaign.  He said he would always defend Obama from white supremacy.

When Professor West wants to talk about the endowments at the institutions that pay him the big bucks, then i'll accept his criticism.

When a black man wants to get elected in this country, he is going to have to take money from white people.

      •  Cornel West isn't allowed to criticize? (1+ / 0-)

Does this restriction apply to all people who work at Princeton and Harvard?  I don't understand your reasoning.

        •  my reasoning (0+ / 0-)

If he is wary of the "people doing the funding" than can't i ask the same question of him?

Remember the "concerned alumni of princeton"?   Judge Alito?  Remember back in 1986 what they were still working for?   They didn't want women or minorities at Princeton.

Do you think some of the Alumni funding West's fat paycheck are still "concerned"?

That is my reasoning.  If West wants to criticize some of Obama's funders (as I do) than I think he needs to own up to some of his funders.

I have no doubt the 'Concerned Alumni' wish Cornel West had never arrived at Princeton because he continues to be outspoken and unabashed.  Cornel's point is that Obama's position on issues can be (or may already have been) compromised by his contributors, and I know you've heard many, many others make the same assertion about politicians of any ethnicity.

        •  Cornel Is Apparently Being 'Uppity'... (5+ / 0-)

...because he obviously doesn't understand that the same white people funding Obama's campaign also donate  money to Princeton where Cornel is supposed to shut up and get back to the Afro-American whatever Department and consider himself fortunate that they took him on after being thrown out of Harvard for causing similar 'trouble' up in Cambridge.  Cornel is only supposed to  show up at wine and cheese receptions on Homecoming Weekend when the trustees need to show how "diverse"  the faculty is.  Where the hell does Cornel get off criticizing and questioning the racial sensibilities of the intelligent progressives who are so charitable as to give him a job.  Hope you understand now.

      •  That's crap (0+ / 0-)

Just because West works or has worked for those universities does not mean that he is complicit in whatever varied ideologies contributors might have.  Cornel West has done great work for humankind.

and so he can criticize others for doing the same?

In your analysis that should also be "crap" should it not?

            •  here is what i found (0+ / 0-)

West's comments came during the afternoon panel discussion after historian Lerone Bennett, who wrote a book about the "myth" of Lincoln freeing the slaves. Bennett said Lincoln freed the slaves in Richmond where he had no power and left slavery intact in Norfolk in 1863.

"They don't teach that in Virginia," Bennett said.

Obama kicking off his campaign in Springfield shows he is "walking a tightrope," West said. West said the black community's questions for Obama should include, "How deep is your love for the people" and "Where is your money coming from?"

"Starting off in Springfield is not impressive to me," West said to applause.

Smiley said Obama had apologized to him for missing the discussion.

Looks like Obama has a lot to prove to everyone.  I find that pretty depressing.   I agree with West that it is a tightrope.   I find his comments about where the money is coming from less than productive.  But perhaps West could care less if Obama gets a fair shot (as if that is possible) and has other goals.
