before the Democratic Convention is over, he's gonna get called the 'n' word a few times, among other racial slurs, even by one or two dems suffering from a slip of the tongue, and some black and white folks, with insincere apologies to slowly follow.

Y'all forget that if "they" were vicious on Max Cleland and John Kerry, decorated Vietnam vets with stellar recordsl, with one being a paraplegic(?), to say nothing of both mirroring "them" in race and gender, what isn't there to expect from the way they'll treat both Hilary and Obama, both very new serious entities injecting themselves into this business of running for US president?

By the time their campaigns are over, Hilary's going to be called a lesbian numerous times and Obama is going to be a black a** so and so, so steel yourselves and stop being so squeamish.  They'll both be smeared both in the tabloids and in right wing owned MSM broadcasts and newspapers.

    •  Salon is suppoed to be a (0+ / 0-)

progressive magazine so that is why there is such a strong reaction to teh use of the word "uppity" to describe Obama.

I agree with you that the right will continue to throw a lot of racist and sexisit shit at Obama and Hillary; I just didn't think that Salon would be part of it.

insults and calling names about Democratic candidates as well as those who disagree with others' candidate choices, and they're supposed to be "progressive" too.  Check out the Gore thread, if you think I'm lying.  Whether Democrats or Republicans, lots of people don't play nice, so you have to pick your shots and pick your spots about what you're going to raise a ruckus over.

Besides, no matter their politics, whether it's Salon.com or wherever, there isn't one media source these days that won't print or in some way broadcast something provocative to get attention.  Pretty much every entity operates on the level of printing/broadcasting whatever it takes to get ratings/hits.

Then there's the fact that maybe, just maybe, the person authoring the piece didn't know or understand that the word 'uppity' can be construed as a derogatory descriptive by some.

It's a tempest in a teapot, that's all.  There were even comments on this diary in which some said the Obama 60 Minutes interview was questionable, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I'm saying that if you look for trouble, you very often find it, even where there is none. Folk ought to be saving all this righteous indignation for the real insults that are bound to come.  I'm black, I'm a boomer who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama during the 60s, when there were white and colored fountains, when you couldn't sit in the front of the bus nor next to a white person; I've even had the experience of being told this.

So I think I'm qualified to know when something's racist or even borderline racist, and when it is not.  That word is not a real insult or even a timid racial assault.  Certainly it isn't enough to get all riled up like many here did. It's much ado about nothing.

        That's all I'm saying.
