then we will NEVER have a President in this country who isn't white or male.

Leave the pessimists behind. If they had their way, a good portion of this country would still be enslaved, while the majority of the remainder wouldn't be allowed to vote.

My girlfriend, who is black, is bemused by my adoration for all things Obama. "Oh, sure, he's great," she says, "but a black man will never get elected president in America. And if he does get elected, he won't be around on January 31st to get sworn in." I think she only half-believes that and she still plans on voting for him, but this same sentiment has been echoed by several black friends of mine.

It's easy to discount racism and relegate it to the past if you're white, but black, Hispanic and Native American people have a very different experience of the country's racial dynamic.

One other note on Barack Obama and the myth that black people don't support him -- I'm a college student and I was struck that perhaps 40% to 50% of the students on the Million Strong for Barack facebook group are black. Anyone who's been in higher education recently knows that not a whole lot is 40% to 50% black there. There's certainly some degree of disconnect with the old guard civil rights standard-bearers who are intimately connected with the Clintonistas, but young black college students seem particularly engaged by Obama's campaign. Both Clinton and Obama will perform strongly in black communities.

    •  Now we need a non-repub prezident (0+ / 0-)

to keep this country alive. Otherwise we'll have much too many never's.

Even in normal times, I would support arguments like "Let's elect her because we ever want a woman president", or "black president", etc. That is like some California cons saying "Let's change consitution to allow Terminator be a president, because... it's been a while since the last constitutional ammendment".

That does not mean I would not vote for a woman or an African American. But at this time, I would not hardly support a Democratic candidate with a PR handicap (yes, handicap for this country at this time) like that. Especially if I do not like political styles (and substances, if I can see them) of Hillary, and Obama as well.
