show me where used the word "uppity" as descriptive of a caucasian ... then, maybe your comment might have some level of creedence ...

Look, I've read Salon since the late 1990s. They often put in snarky or facetious text. Kind of like the "Uppity women" bumper sticker.

It's a way of, you know, having fun with the subject.

This whole contretemps is manufactured by overly sensitive liberals.

Its an article about white suburban developments trying to appeal to a certian type of Anglophiliac home buyer by naming themselves inn imitation of English towns.  Can't be more Caucasian than that.  What's it called?  Getting Uppity In Suburbia.

Look, I agree that "uppity" has a history when used in regards to certain black people, but I think you are wrong to suggest it doesn't have any other meanings as well.

ABout Bush's purposeful poor record on employment:

"Don't believe the Bush administration's hand-wringing over its pathetic record on employment. The president's backers want a stagnant job market -- it keeps the help from getting uppity."

and you'll find other usages in letters to Salon, as well as a reference to Snow's comments about Harold Ford which calls Ford uppity in a clear nod to a racial description, but one which is meant to characterize Snow's attitude, not the author's.

      •  you're right, of course (0+ / 0-)

but the context is always classist, whether race is involved or otherwise ... a google site-search ( reveals the most common usage is from folk who've submitted e-letters, with their own editorial content slanted heavily toward using the term with blacks and with women ...

your two exceptions, when taken in totality of context, tends to prove the rule ...
