NOBODY has "the best of Lincoln" and ANYBODY.  In fact, we'll probably never live long enough to see anybody who has "the best of Lincoln" PERIOD.

Imagine Barack Obama having his eloquence and good judgment (and more), but without the Columbia undergrad and Harvard Law education.  Without, in fact, having ANY formal education at all.

I grew up in central Illinois, I've probably read every major book in my lifetime about Lincoln, and I'm not among those who resent Barack Obama's attempts to draw some limited parallels between himself and Lincoln, because there are some very legitimate parallels to be drawn.  But saying that he (or any other politician in our history) has "the best of Lincoln" is a statement with which I strongly suspect Barack Obama would himself disagree.

never ever ever seen before or since? That is a bit too much. He was the best that we've had till now, but NO ONE is so special as to be unsurpassable. I can give you examples from many fields (which I'm sure that you could come up with yourself).

By "best of", I clearly meant the political smarts and toughness of both men, the decency, wisdom and character of Lincoln, and the charisma, magnetism and charm of Clinton. At least, he certainly gives every sign of possessing such qualities in great abundance. And by Grant I meant, obviously, that "He fights".

I don't agree that we'll never see the likes of Lincoln again. That's just idol worship.
