    with all due respect to Orthodox Jews, these rules sound like a lot of nonsense.  If you taught your dog how to turn on the lights at home, would it be OK to "use" that electricity?  Give me a break.

      but there's no requirement of suffering on shabbat, just not doing "work". so, people prepare for shabbat by having some lights on and some off.

      i'm not religious, but it actually makes a lot of sense by forcing a person to be mindful that this is a special day. it can actually be quite meditative and liberating.
