If you're looking for purity in politics, a prez campaign (at least a serious prez campaign) is the last place to look for it.  The Clintons had their evil alliance w/ Dick Morris.  Dukakis had Sasso.  Carter had Lance, Rafshoon, and Kirbo.

My wife and I were very active in the campaign of the last jr senator from IL to run for prez.  Paul Simon ran on basically the same themes in '88 that Obama's running on now.  Simon also owed huge political debts to Jerry Berlin, a sleazy heavyweight local fundraiser who was later shot by his business partner.

Initially, I figured that Simon tolerated Berlin as a necessary evil.  I ultimately came to realize that Simon actually liked Berlin.  By that point, my wife and I were basically shoved aside in favor of people tied to Berlin, and Simon's campaign was in a nose dive nationally.

4 years later, Berlin, who was acquitted on bribery charges in the interim, was a hanger on in the Harkin campaign. That time around, a major lawyer/lobbyist from DC who was Harkin's key fundraiser ran things here.  While the Harkin campaign was a much more pleasant experience, it had its less savory side as well.

If you're looking for a candidate who's totally clean, you should probably support Kucinich's candidacy.  All of the candidates who have a chance of winning are compromised.  To steal a Jack Nicholson line, you need to look for the leper who has the most fingers and toes left.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I see things that never were and ask why not?
