  •  the first giant octopus i ever saw was at (6+ / 0-)

the monterey bay aquarium in 1981... she was in a small (yet unrenovated)tank and stared out at me "begging" for freedom.

she stayed for a number of years - and was moved to luxurious surroundings at the aquarium, where - after laying her eggs - the aquarium moved her to the large exhibit containing multiple creatures of the deep - expecting her to soon die.

well, SOON, the aquarium started noticing remnants of crab shells on the floor - but still couldn't spot her.  periodically, someone would get a quick glimpse of her at various spots in the tank.

on my birthday several years ago, i spent it wandering the wonderful exhibits at the aquarium, stopping at the overlook by the penguin exhibit to watch below into the area in the tank that had a filtering grid.

much to my astonishment, there she was - she came out onto the grid in full view and "danced" for me for about three minutes, changing colors from soft to deep excited red and back!  i was ecstatic - when i ran to tell the aquarium staff, they, too, were thrilled! they all searched for her with only very few sightings over the last few years.

the greatest gift of all was when the aquarium released her back into the ocean - she had defied all odds by surviving her time in captivity and surviving the laying of her eggs.

soon as i got arthritis, most of my caps ran away from home! those that remain, huddle together in fear!
