  •  Interestingly, "Senator" Shirley Franklin... (3+ / 0-)

... was the top vote-getter (over 50% of votes cast) in my diary poll of last week, in which I asked what Kossaks would like to see Mayor Franklin do next, after finishing her second term as Atlanta Mayor.

If I had a little more confidence that she could win, she'd by my top choice in this current poll. She's been an excellent mayor, and she would bring a great combination of skills & experiences to the US Senate: smart, tough, practical, good listener, no-BS, honest, constructive, deeply committed to justice & opportunity for all.

Plus, having an African-American woman Senator from the South would be so sweet!

but a statewide run would be an uphill battle for her, sadly. If John Lewis were to retire, which I would NOT like to happen anytime in the near future, Shirley would be a shoo-in for his seat.

      •  Okay, so here's a scenario for you. (0+ / 0-)

Rep. Lewis is troubled by Mayor Franklin's continued (and sincere) pronouncements that she's going to retire from public life after finishing her second term. I suppose he agrees with us that she's "the real deal" and a valuable public servant.

He knows that Her Honor is mostly unenthusiastic about having to run a hard campaign again... so he calls her in and tell her that he'll announce his retirement provided she agrees to announce that she'd run for his seat. Which would indeed be a shoo-in race for her.

So Shirley goes to Congress in the House, does a great job, etc. etc.  Then, maybe... ?

Shirley becomes GA-05 congresswoman and John Lewis runs for mayor. Wouldn't that be sweet!

He's earned a few years of retirement, after all he's done in this lifetime.

Don't know who would make the best candidate for the next Mayor of Atlanta. A good topic for our AtlantaKos meet-up, don't you think?
