I'd love to have someone with a background in Japanese politics chime in.  It's certainly not a topic I'm particularly familiar with.

I'll jump over and send him the link. Perhaps he can add some more context.

Knowing this now, now I grasp more of Kwitny's The Crimes of Patriots - the racketeering in the Pacific would seem to segue well into the criminal enterprises coming out of Japan. It's their natural territory, so they would keep a finger on it and probably get a cut.

So would CNMI, come to think of it. Dengre, you around?

Clemons is detailing the power of the dark elements in the nation conversation. There are similarities with our discourse here in the mainstream media. They all toe a line; the line is just in different places.

          And this:

          snip
...sensitive topics concerning Japan’s national identity, war responsibility or imperial system.
          snip

          The big cover-ups I see:

*war responsibility...that leads directly to them. This is where they are actively covering up their traces and their treasure.

*national identity...like the neocons here and many of the Republicans, they want to define and control who we think we are. (Not what we really need or the public good.)

*imperial system...may be a forced alliance on dark group's part, but necessary to deceive most of aristocracy and old power. And it may not be that forced in many cases and probably is incestuous over time. That is, it maintains imperial authoritarian structure. They use it as cover, probably very much a paid cover, one where they can move and operate freely within a certain society.

Damn good find, 235. There's something there and it plugs a gap in the bigger story.

I once read one of Greg Palast's earlier investigative pieces about price fixing across the world, which had been divided into seven regional sections. Six of the seven were eventually convicted. The US sector essentially 'got away.'

My interest was piqued about those seven sectors in terms of dark energy, a force you know exists by its gravitation, its transactions and history, yet you can't directly view it. You've discovered one of dark forces. Clemons describes the public friction with it, something we can see, if only obliquely.
