    If the mistakes are large enough, the US will lack the power to try anything similar for some time.

    The whole thing reminds me of King Sebastian of Portugal. Full of hubris, piss and vinegar, he decides to wage a crusade on Morocco. Against the better advice of his friends, relatives, vassals and allies, he gambles most of Portugal's treasury and a generation of it's finest men on an ill-advised and poorly planned and executed campaign.

    Of course he and his men were slaughtered.

    The result was that Portugal lost it's independence for sixty years, and never again played an international role equivalent to it's former glory.

    The major difference between King Sebastian and George W. though, is that King Sebastian died in battle, leading his men in a charge.

    George W. on the other hand, is a deserter and a terminal coward.
