    DNA from genetically modified corn strains has been found in some of those important "ancestor" strains. It was thought that their isolation would protect them, but apparently the GMO corn being grown all over Mexico, legally or not, is tainting both the food supply, and the important ancient corn "gene bank" that scientists rely on in order to insure the availability of strains which carry diverse genes. They could be the key to disease or drought resistance, etc., when needed.
