the right in Texas is big on "English as the first language" stuff, as you'd expect, but the Texas GOP has been massaging the Hispanic vote for a decade and more.  Texas is majority-minority, and they're not stupid (well, Cornyn aside).  You'll notice that the one place where W, the former governor of Texas, is moderate is on immigration.  There's a reason for that: in the state he comes from, the Hispanic vote matters.  For both parties.

I meant to mention your point about W and immigration.

Another thing to keep in mind is that agriculture is still very important here, and all those farmers and ranchers depend on cheap immigrant labor to exploit.

Trust me, there would be a lot of wealthy Anglo Texans who would be very unhappy if immigrations stopped suddenly tomorrow.

My family in West Texas (and every single person they knew) relied on hired hands to help with cotton farming.  And West Texas sinks or swims on the cotton market.  And without the hired hands (many, and even most, of whom are illegal) it all comes to a grinding halt.

They're not interested in actual enforcement of immigration laws, let alone mass deportments.
