  •  i think the macintosh is a nice computer (0+ / 0-)

yeah its cult following squicks me a little bit, but I'd certainly recommend one over windows.  The ipod is a different matter.  I don't want to be a pod person.

    •  The "fanboi" types bother me too. (2+ / 0-)

... they can really embarrass me, an Apple enthusiast who doesn't think all Windows users are evil incarnate.

But you are being offensive with the conflation of people who buy iPods are people who voted for Bush above. That and "pod person" is a bit much coming from someone who doesn't like the extremism of cult-like fandom.

iPod owners are also not evil incarnate, nor does their choice of music player dictate their political preference...

      •  there is groupthink from the left and right (0+ / 0-)

and there is nonpolitical groupthink such as music player groupthink.  So ipod users don't especially overlap Bush voters (probably the opposite); they just (often, not always) made their music player choice using a similar process to how various dumb (but separate) political choices got made.   Groupthink is rarely a good reason to do anything.

Craziest of all is Apple's ad campaign "Think different--join our cult!!!"

        •  You are still overgeneralizing: (2+ / 0-)

Now conflating groupthink = owning an iPod... or iPod=makes dumb choices in life... you are still doing the same thing as above. Or is it really groupthink=not using what you are using? Sorry, that Bush comparison really bothered me... circular firing squad stuff.

You are not going to let go of the iPod-evil meme.... that's okay.

I do thank you for commenting politely though, thank you.

          •  buying an ipod because you like ipods = ok (0+ / 0-)

They do have some nice features, not enough to outweigh their limitations in my opinion, but everyone's priorities and preferences are different.

Buying an ipod because that's what the kewl kidz are buying, without regard to the quality of the ipod itself = groupthink.

            Do you understand the difference?

            •  Sure, I understand the difference. (0+ / 0-)

I also understand that is not what you were saying, in various degrees with each successive comment, but I am glad to see you recognize this difference.

This goes for any advertised product BTW, not just iPods.

Have you seen the new Britney-branded scissors being sold in an "As Seen on TV" informercial?

[Actually, that is just a joke, although I expect to see that reported here any time now. Thank goodness I don't watch network TV...]
