  •  Walmart may not be the biggest concern (6+ / 0-)

Safeway and the rest of the big grocers compete with more than Walmart here in SoCal - they compete with small grocers and lots of natural and organic grocers and weekly farmers' markets. I have been asking small business owners what they think of Arnold's 4% charge for NOT covering employees and they all say that 4% is lower than their current costs. That means that going with 4% will be an advantage to Safeway's small mom and pop competitors.

I rarely went to Safeway, Vons, Ralphs, etc. before the strike but never do now. I can also attest that their parking lots are even emptier now since the strike than before. We have many choices in SoCal and I think that Mr. Burd is trying to pull a fast one on our small local markets. By the time I might drive to the nearest Walmart, I would pass at least 4 natural foods markets with decent prices...and about as many Safeways.
