    there are lots of others: Herbert Gans has a pretty good grasp of the professional socialization of journalists.

    Chomsky's framework, btw, is Herman and Chomsky's framework, and has the advantage of being encapsulated and then made public by non-experts so that it is a very accessible framework.  Its also a macro-based analysis (focusing purposely on the structures of the media that lead to the kind of reporting rather than allowing for the possibility of "bad apples" bringing the system down). They are both macro-type guys interested in media overhauls, not "reform".
