Voter turnout in America is really low and I suspect TV ads contribute to that statistics.  People want to have a campaign button or a bumper sticker.  They want to feel some sort of personal connection.  They want to do something they feel will make a difference, hence the success of house parties and such.  Grassroots campaigning was alway most effective.  That's why people remember the whistle-stop campaigns with fondness.  That sort of thing with press coverage leaves people with images they really remember.  TV political ads rarely do that.  It's all that subliminal stuff that gets really annoying and always has.
