    they have PAID maternity & paternity leave.  They actually think that caring for little kids has value, and that if parents are willing to do it themselves, they should have some income for that.  Shocking!  I don't remember the exact times, but some countries have 6 months, or even a year or two.  

    Other countries have free or very very inexpensive daycare.  They actually value taking care of kids!  

    Here in CA we have 6 weeks paid parental leave at, iirc 55% of your salary.  Not nearly enough, but better than  nothing.

        every time I think about what we don't get here... it's not good for kids or parents to have a system which doesn't support caring for kids.  

        And while of course "life is about choices" there are some choices which don't make sense - like "fulfilling career v. caring for kids" not to mention "work that barely pays more than daycare or welfare" etc.
