life just doesn't allow you to be two places at once. Kids aren't a hobby, they change EVERYTHING. SO unfortunately if you have to raise a family, and a fellow researcher doesn't, they have an advanatge with regard to career.  That is just life.

Generals gathered in their masses Just like witches at black masses.. Evil minds that plot destruction Sorcerers of deaths construction..........

    •  Again, why does it have to be all or nothing? (0+ / 0-)

It is one thing to have a career advantage because you devoted everything to your career, it is another thing for it to be systematically impossible to both succeed in your career and have a family.

These problems are solvable, this diary is about some of the solutions.

Seriously. Men with kids get tenure more often than men without kids.

Why exactly is it that we can't find a way to accomodate women who want to have children and be great scientists?

The idea that children are just a distraction from being a great scientist is just dead wrong. On the contrary, there's nothing quite like having your own living, breathing neurobiology experiment 24/7 to give you fresh insights as to how the brain works and how the body works and how the world around you works.

I agree you can't be in two places at once. But there's no reason women shouldn't be able to have their children and then put in their time in the lab and still be eligible for tenure at a slightly older age.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!
