  •  If the Bible were to be taught in US schools (6+ / 0-)

It might make a dent in the heretical teachings of Republican evangelical churches. Not suggesting this but I can see an up side.

Can you imagine some winger's child coming home from school and saying, "Hey Mom, there's no such thing as The Rapture in the bible!"

    •  An article advocating Religious Studies (7+ / 0-)

in every high school, that makes sense.

Let kids learn about every religion in units and then they can pick which one sounds real to them, or none at all.

I'm fine with kids getting a proper education about the religions of the world. It would help teach geography.

But that debate is hardly as earth-shaking as the story about bin Laden living large in Northern Pakistan in a country that is welcoming a Taliban resurgence. Our supposed ally.

That is hard news. Not of much interest to stupid Americans.

I think that an elective class in world religions would be a good thing for many people.  For one thing, fundamentalists of whatever sort would be likely to sign up because, hey, it's religion - and then they'd have to see that there are other faiths beyond theirs, and that all the others don't consist of satan worship or whatever.   At least a few might have their minds opened.

Just the Bible, though?  That's a little weird.

        •  My wife is a Chaplain at a big city hospital (12+ / 0-)

She has welcomed Jewish babies into the world, comforted as an Islamic matriarch died, given last rights to Catholic latin premies, comforted a family whose 13-year old hipster bopper girl was shot for no reason after school.

Her take is: "God is too big for one religion."

          •  Some quotes for her to use. (0+ / 0-)

Gandhi: When asked how many religions are there by a reporter his response was, "How many people are there?"

In Japan they have a saying: "Everyone is trying to get to the top of Mt. Fuji. They are just coming from different sides of the mountain."
